Como Animales!

Next Tuesday, May 6th, at 7:00 PM, we invite you to the opening of the photography exhibition Como Animales (Like Animals), a profound and moving look through the lens of Germán Nieves at La Casa de las Estrellas in Lanzarote. This photography exhibition invites us to reflect, empathize, and see the world through the eyes of another being.

10:00 AM to 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM

‘Como Animales!!’ (“Like Animals” )is a Spanish expression that defines violent, brusque, intense, unconscious, aggressive, visceral, unconscionable, unconscionable, brutish human behaviour.

This behaviour can manifest itself at any age or sex, both between humans and from a human towards another animal or thing.

Behaving “Like Animals” is an emotional response. It can arise either from the pent-up energy of anger, or from the excitement produced through play… Anger or Joy go hand in hand.

My name is Germán Nieves, I am a Photographer, and in the year 2023 I travelled to Lanzarote for 6 months. There I came across La Casa de las Estrellas.

They say that it is not by chance to meet people, places, events, or animals with whom we cross our path, they say that everything that happens to us are essential pieces that will finally shape the puzzle that we will call “Our Life”.

La Casa de las Estrellas is an animal sanctuary, a refuge where different species live together, protecting themselves and recovering from unhealthy treatment. Animals that have been treated “Like Animals” by humans, or by circumstances generated by humans.

And that’s where we found ourselves. In the middle of the desert.

‘Como Animales!!’is a photographic project born out of a connection. The photographs are not meant to be a reflection of what La Casa de las Estrellas is, but they were all taken there between the 9th and the 22nd of September 2023.

After working as a volunteer at the Sanctuary, I decided to start this project.

Liala Miliardi, an Italian woman, manager and responsible of the Sanctuary, gave me permission, trust and facilities to take the photographs that you can see exhibited in the Civic Centre Conecta Tías in Lanzarote, from the 6th to the 14th of May 2025.

Each photograph, or set of photographs, is a Universe, a little piece of time and space of what happens there, an interpretation translated into Black and White images. A walk to bring you closer to where your heart wants to take you.

All the photographs on display are for sale at a very low price. The money raised will be used entirely to support the project of La Casa de las Estrellas in Lanzarote.

During the exhibition days there will be talks about the projects ‘Como Animales!!’ and La Casa de las Estrellas.

Germán Nieves will be present at the Civic Centre every day of the exhibition.
